Valentine’s Day traditions date back into 469 AD. Long ago, they had many traditions that have been translated through the years and are stilled carried on today. Although party supplies were not on their list of things to get, they still expressed their desire to be with someone.
The most known tradition of Valentine’s Day is to pick someone to be your Valentine. On February 14th and February 15th, the Romans would hold a festival. The idea of this festival was the notion that sacrificing wolves would increase fertility. So, at the ceremony, this is what they did. Before the festival, the men would pick a name, at random, of women in their village out of a jar. They would then take these women to the festival. If the man was successful in his attempts, then it proves the woman would make a fertile wife.
A major word and symbol associated with Valentine’s Day is Love. It is said that Saint Valentine himself would marry people against the emperors wish. He continued this until he was killed by the emperor on February 14th, 269 AD.
Another legend is that he was imprisoned for being a priest, during the Dark Ages. After being imprisoned, people missed him and threw flower about his prison bars. The jailors daughter and Saint Valentine feel in love. He wrote her love letters many times. His last love letter, before he died, said “Love Your Valentine”.
Whichever way the legend goes, it is clearly seen where Valentine’s Day got it’s Origins and how throughout the years, we have interpreted them. Need to celebrate Valentine's day this year without breaking the bank? We all know that love is not just about exchanging expensive gifts. It's about knowing your special someone well enough to choose what would really be to their liking.
